About Me
Hey y’all — step on in. Or “come in the house and sit down,” as my people say.
I am Robby Batte — a photographer, a ruralographer, from Lunenburg County, Virginia — photographing the in-between: the space where rural reality, memory, and Light overlap and become something more than a moment.
My family has lived on the soil of Southside Virginia for more than four centuries. I don’t photograph this place as a visitor. I make pictures as someone shaped by its roads, fields, voices, and quiet rhythms. Southside isn’t a backdrop — it’s my root system.
I’m drawn to the fractions of time most people pass through without noticing — the hush between breaths, the pause before something changes. That’s where Light lingers long enough to tell the truth. That’s where photographs stop being pictures and start carrying meaning.
How I See
My influences lean toward the plainspoken, the unvarnished, and the honest. Eldridge Bagley shaped me deeply and quietly— not only through his paintings, but through the way he revealed the sacred inside everyday rural life, a close variation I knew growing up. Hopper and Wyeth taught me the power of silence; O'Keeffe taught me about layers of simplicity; Bagley showed me that silence lives right here at home.
The writers and musicians that feel closest to my work — Twain, Steinbeck, Hemingway, John Prine, Bob Seger, Scott Miller — all understood the same thing: the ordinary isn’t small. It’s the archive of who we are.
I don’t chase spectacle. I wait for the moment when Light turns memory into meaning.
Artist Statement
I make photographs in the in-between — the narrow space where documentary fact and emotional truth share the same breath. I’m not trying to create a prettier version of the world. I’m trying to see what’s already there, quietly, before it slips away.
I come from Southside Virginia, but I don’t carry that as entitlement. I carry it as roots. This land shaped my pace, my attention, and my understanding of what Light can mean.
My work lives in the soft middle ground — where homecoming, quiet awe, and spiritual breath overlap.
That’s where I stand.
That’s where the photograph happens.
Somewhere in between.
This is my “why.”
